Privacy Statement

Our Commitment
In handling your personal information, Queensland Police Credit Union Limited (QPCU) is committed to complying with the Privacy Act 1988, and the Credit Union Code of Practice. A copy of our Privacy Policy is available on the Internet at www.qpcu.com.au or on request.

QPCU’s Use of Your Personal Information
We collect personal information from you when you apply to use our products and services. This information enables us to provide:

  • the products and services you require; and
  • information about products and services available to you from Queensland Police Credit Union Limited and associated businesses including information about special offers, discounts and competitions.

We do not generally collect information that is ‘sensitive personal information’ as defined by the Privacy Act 1988. However, we may on occasion collect information relating to your health (i.e. for insurance purposes). Such information will only be collected from you and will only be used for the purpose for which it was collected.

Our Disclosure of Your Personal Information
Personal information is treated as confidential within the Credit Union and is used by us for the purpose for which it was collected or for a related purpose. Related purposes may include:

  • our own market analysis and product development;
  • informing you about new products or services; and/or
  • detecting and preventing fraud and other criminal activity.

In providing products and services to you it may be necessary for us to provide your personal information to other organisations with whom we conduct business. We do not disclose sensitive personal information to third parties without your permission or instruction.

Other organisations include related entities, solicitors and legal advisors, accountants and auditors, printers and mailing services, insurers, collection agents, conveyancers, Indue Ltd (Indue) (our national credit union body), and government agencies which regulate our products and services.

Your personal information is only provided to those entities to the extent necessary to enable us to provide our products and services to you and to the extent required by law.

If you supply us with information about another person, you represent to us that you are authorised to do so and you agree to show that person a copy of this statement and to tell the person that:

  • we are holding personal information about that person;
  • personal information collected about that person will be used for the primary purpose for which it was collected and related secondary purposes;
  • personal information collected about that person may be disclosed to third party organisations as described in this statement;
  • they have the right to access and correct personal information we hold about that person; and
  • the information may be disclosed as set out in this form.

Information About You from Third Parties
We may need to source information about you from a third party; for example, a credit reporting agency, an insurer, another financial institution or foreign currency suppliers. Wherever possible this will be done with your authorisation, or where this is not possible, we will inform you when such information is collected.

If you consent to us doing so, we may provide you with information from time to time about new products and services available to you from Queensland Police Credit Union Limited, or other businesses with whom we have a relationship.

Your consent to our providing this information to you will be implied unless you notify us that you do not wish to receive this information. You may do this by contacting our Privacy Officer on 131 468 and advising that you do not wish to receive marketing information.

Security of Your Personal Information
In line with new technology, we are continually improving the security of this information we collect. The Credit Union takes all reasonable steps to protect the personal information of Members by:

  • securing all files with personal information in locked cabinets;
  • only providing staff with access to personal information;
  • de-identifying personal information that is not necessary;
  • destroying information after the required retention period;
  • ensuring the computer is secure at all times;
  • audits of the computer systems; and
  • password access to the computer system.

Information We are Required to Send to You
Under our Constitution, which Members have adopted and only they can agree to amend, we are required to provide you with certain information. This information includes notices of meetings, elections and any proposed changes to the Constitution.

We are also legally bound to provide monthly statements to Members with Visa cards. We include Member newsletters and other compliance inserts with Members’ statements, because they contain important information relating to Members’ accounts and current services which Members would not otherwise receive.

What If You Do Not Wish to Provide Us with Information
In order to provide products and services to you we require information about you. If you do not provide us with all of the information we require, we may be unable provide products or services to you. If you do not provide us with your Tax File Number there may also be taxation implications for you.

Your Rights to Access Information
Under the Privacy Act, in most cases you have the right to access personal information we hold about you. If the information is incorrect, you have the right to require us to amend the information. We rely on the accuracy of the information you provide to us. If you believe or know that information we hold about you is incorrect, out of date or incomplete, please contact us on 131 468 and we will make all reasonable efforts to correct the information.

How To Complain if You Think There Has Been a Breach of Privacy
If you believe QPCU has been involved in a breach of your privacy, you can address your complaint, query or concern by simply calling the department of QPCU which you consider has committed the breach. If you are not satisfied with the response to your complaint, query or concern, you may wish to speak with an Executive Officer or Manager to try to resolve the issue. If after speaking with an Executive Officer or Manager you are still not satisfied, ask for an Internal Dispute Resolution brochure or the address details of QPCU’s Dispute Resolution Officer (DRO) so you can provide details in writing of the dispute and to whom you have been speaking at QPCU. The DRO will investigate the matter for you impartially and provide you with details of such investigation. You can contact the DRO on 131 468 between 8.45am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.

Anonymity
Where it is lawful and practicable, you will be given the option of not identifying yourself e.g. the annual Member Survey.
